Qualifications

All candidates MUST meet the following:

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under an assigned fire station Lieutenant and on-duty Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Lieutenant. Questions patient or other bystanders to gather medical information. Checks pulse and respiration of patient. Administers medical treatment in response to patient’s medical condition. Determines whether to transport patient using ambulance or wing based on medical situation and according to orders and protocols. Communicates with medical personnel at hospital regarding medical treatment and/or condition of patient. Loads and unloads patients into and from ambulance. Drives emergency ambulance on an emergency call in a safe manner and transports patients to hospitals or medical facilities. Assists hospital personnel in emergency situations. Listens for alarm and details of radio message received from alarm office. Cleans equipment and inspects or tests equipment on apparatus.

    OTHER FUNCTIONS: 1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

    TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Assists other Firefighters in lifting and carrying a victim and stretcher weighing an average 220-240 pounds (160-180 pound victim average and 60 pound stretcher). Requires walking, running, standing, lifting, climbing, stooping, etc.

    TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Works from assigned fire station to perform paramedic duties in emergency vehicles, such as ambulances at emergency scenes. Must be able to work an eight (8) hour shift which equals a forty (40) hour work week/eighty (80) hours during a pay period or a twelve (12) hour shift which may equal up to a forty-two (42) hour work week and up to eighty-four (84) hours during a pay period. May be exposed to contagious infections and diseases. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions. Interacts with the public under possibly stressful and/or dangerous conditions.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate or equivalent required. Candidate’s age must be at least nineteen (19) years by the starting date of the Paramedic Class for which he/she is considered. In addition, the candidate’s maximum age cannot exceed fifty (50) years of age upon date of hire. Must be currently licensed as a Paramedic by any State and be eligible for reciprocity in the State of Tennessee prior to employment. Must currently have or had held a Paramedic National Registry Certification. Must maintain Paramedic licensure as required by state guidelines in accordance with the Tennessee Emergency Medical Act as a condition of continued employment. Must be record free of any felony and/or misdemeanor conviction involving moral turpitude and pass a required background investigation. May have to pass a comprehensive medical examination and physical ability test which does not include the Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT). Must possess and maintain a valid Class D Tennessee Driver’s License.

    The City Charter requires that City Employees, with the exception of “first responders”, must establish residence within Shelby County within six (6) months from their date of employment. Proof of residence will be required at the time of hire.     The hiring process to “Find your Fire” (a Memphis Fire Single Role Paramedic) begins after completing the initial online application and consists of multiple steps, including but not limited to physical and academic testing, pre-employment screenings, psychological and medical assessments.

      3. If you meet the minimum requirements as a Fire Private II – Lateral and want to serve the Memphis community click “Apply for Job”
      4. Enter your email address and click “Go” (using a valid email address of which you check periodically)
      5. If you do not have an account, enter your first and last name after clicking “Go”, then click “Start Application”
      6. Click “I Accept”, after reading the privacy agreement
      7. Enter your login credential and click “Login”
      8. Complete application
      9. Advance to review, then Submit

        Application Review/Screening

        Application will be reviewed and if minimum qualifications are met, the applicant will be forwarded to the Interview Team for scheduling.

        Contingent Job Offers are given with consideration of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete and pass the remaining screenings and assessments.

        Candidates are selected on individual merits; not a first come, first serve basis. Single Role Paramedics will be filled – in accordance to budgetary allowance – based on the candidates’ succession through all phases of the employment process.

        Day 1 – Medical Assessment

        Note: The entire employment process generally takes two (2) to six (6) months to determine an applicant’s suitability
        for employment.

        Attend MFD’s candidate processing session

        1. All recruit candidates will be advised to attend a candidate processing session at the MFD Training Academy to be fitted for Uniforms and other PPE equipment
        2. Bring all required forms as instructed
        3. Tour the Academy facility
        4. Review parking instructions
        5. Receive 1st day expectations and instructions
        6. Issuance of Benefits package
        7. Meet the MFD Command and Training Staff
        8. Final Processing paperwork from HR

        Complete 2 weeks in-class and 6 weeks field paid training as a Paramedic and graduate from the Memphis Fire Training Academy

        A successful Paramedic candidate will complete a 2 weeks in-class and 6 weeks paid training program and followed by a
        12-month probationary period under the supervision of a Field Training Officer (F.T.O).
