Getting Started
Your training begins at the Memphis Fire Training Academy as a Firefighter Recruit, where individuals will learn real-life skills to become and improve their firefighter abilities, including but not limited to:
- Human relations
- Tactical firefighter operations
- Life safety
- Incident Stabilization
- Property Conservation
The Memphis Fire Department’s Training Academy campus offers state-of-the-art training to over 1600 Memphis firefighters. The training is a college accredited EMS school where students earn their license in EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic.
Chester Anderson Training Academy (CATC)
- A 150 capacity auditorium
- Four 50 seat classrooms
- One 25 seat classroom
- Gymnasium and fitness center
- Video production lab and studio
- Computer lab
- Driver training track
- Dive story drill tower
- Two story drill building
- Six bay apparatus building
- Special operation office
Upon graduating from the Academy, probationary firefighters will be assigned to an engine or truck company on one of three shifts. Each probationary firefighter will have received the fire training hours to allow them to take their Firefighter 1 state commission exam that is International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) approved nationally. The probationary period will last for one year and during this time period will be continued on the job training under the supervision of a company officer. Working alongside their company to perform life safety, incident stabilization, and property conservation.
